What Are the Highest Peaks in the Allegheny Mountains?

The Allegheny Mountain Range is part of the Appalachian Mountain system of the eastern United States and Canada. The Alleghenies extend from southwest Virginia to northern Pennsylvania, covering about 400 miles. The 10 highest peaks of the Allegheny Mountains are all located in three West Virginia counties in the eastern portion of the state: Pocahontas, Randolph and Pendleton.

1. Spruce Knob
The highest peak of the Allegheny Mountains is Spruce Knob. Located in West Virginia, it is the summit of Spruce Mountain. Spruce Knob rises to 4,861 feet above Pendleton County.

2. Bald Knob
Bald Knob, also in West Virginia, is the second-highest Allegheny peak, at more than 4,840 feet. It is the summit of Back Allegheny Mountain in Pocahontas County.

3. Thorny Flat
Thorny Flat is the third-highest peak, also with an elevation of more than 4,840 feet. (Some sources claim Thorny Flat is slightly higher than Bald Knob.) Also located in Pocahontas County, Thorny Flat is the highest peak on Cheat Mountain.

4. Mount Porte Crayon
Mount Porte Crayon is the fourth-tallest peak in the Alleghenies. It spans Pendleton and Randolph counties in West Virginia, and its elevation is 4,770 feet.

5. Tygart Valley North
Tygart Valley North in Pocahontas County, W.Va., reaches between 4,760 and 4,800 feet. The peak is the highest point of the Tygart River Valley, which spans five counties.

6. Hosterman Benchmark West
Hosterman Benchmark West is the second-highest peak on Back Allegheny Mountain and sixth highest in the Alleghenies. Located in Pocahontas County, Hosterman rises to 4,757 feet.

7. Red Spruce Knob
Red Spruce Knob is a summit in Pocahontas County. At 4,703 feet, it is the seventh-highest peak of the Allegheny Mountains.

8. Mace Knob
At 4,687 feet, Mace Knob is the eighth-highest peak in the Allegheny Mountains. The Mace Knob summit is also in Pocahontas County.

9. Red Lick Mountain
Red Lick Mountain, in Pocahontas County, peaks at 4,686 feet.

10. Beech Flat Knob
Beech Flat Knob is the 10th-highest peak of the Alleghenies. It rises above Randolph County, W.Va., at 4,682 feet.
